How it all started

The Park is owned and managed by the August 7th Memorial Trust, a local non-profit organization. In 1999 the Trust was set up to take ownership of  land in Nairobi  at the former site of US Embassy. The Trustees main task was to hold the land in trust for the benefit of the Kenyan Public. The Trustees were also mandated to establish, develop, maintain and manage for the use of the public, a Memorial Park on the said land in memory and honour of the victims of the 7th August 1998 terrorist bomb attack which took the lives of 218 innocent people and injured several thousand others, many permanently. All the Trustees are involved in the Park’s development on a purely voluntary basis.
Today the August 7th Memorial Park stands at the site of that terrible tragedy as a memorial to all those who lost their lives, and a tribute to the courage of the several thousand others who have had to cope with permanent injury and/or the loss of loved ones. The Memorial Park is a place where people come to reflect, remember and relax.
The Trust was also set up with the object of fostering goodwill and peace among men with a view of preventing a repeat attack, and has set up a Visitors Memorial Peace Centre where school students and the public are taught the importance of living in harmony with each other, their neighbors, and the need to condemn acts of violence in society so that peace can prevail.

The Trust has also registered the August Seventh Memorial Ventures Ltd which is currently operates a shop to enable the Trust meet its objective of fundraising to maintain the Park.
The Trust’s sources of funding include:
• Donations received in cash and kind from individuals, corporations and other organisations.
• Donor assistance/grants (Ford Foundation, USAID)
• Cash generated from operations e.g. Park entrance fees, events, facilities hire, the park shop etc
