By Samson Babu

The much anticipated Poetry at the Park event took flight on Friday 14th June 2013, At the August Memorial Park where a throng of poetry lovers assembled to pay homage to spoken word poetry.
The venue was jam-packed with fun, with audiences enjoying the aesthetics that accompanied the usually serene and sophisticated ambiance in the park.  Some guests found comfort on the blanket thick evergreen grass-cover, while others opted to rest their backs on the plastic arm-chairs.
The setup was stitched to perfection, with the event organizers living nothing to chance in ensuring that the event went on as planned.
A pedestal stood in front of the audiences sitting area with an artistically sculptured wooden chair flawlessly placed in the middle just behind the microphone stand.
The event opened at 2.30pm contrary to the customary 2p.m as guests were left like pins on paper as they settled down to what was now an exceedingly enchanting mood.
The performing crew led by Juma and his crew better known to the public as “Just a Mic” hijacked the scene with a host of performances from Ngatia the Poet, Pudo, Maxyn, Bene Tena Bena, Wambui, Gufy, Christ’s Boy Centurion, Betoh, Skelle, Josea Sanaa, Tear Drops,  Jicho Pevu and Consumator .
The June Edition of the Poetry in the Park event marks the second Poetry in the park experience after its maiden performance in mid May that inaugurated the event.
The Poetry at the Park event is quickly becoming popular among youths in Nairobi as it continue to receive glowing remarks from many whom have attended the event.
The event is a brainchild of the Art in the Park event which was conceived in 2006 mainly to promote positive art and entertainment, also to encourage a culture of peace within the community.
The event has been able to give youths a platform to showcase their talents and also kept them from falling down to the abyss that is drug/substance abuse.
The event has already begun to attract glaring eyes from organizations among them, the Healthy Mwananchi Community Organization aimed at enriching the health of the public by carrying out diabetes awareness campaigns.
The organization got the opportunity in interacting youths on the dos and don’ts of the medical condition.
The event aims to bring more stakeholders onboard, to help elevate the lives of youths in the estates and also harness their talents.
